Traffic flow on Islamabad’s major arteries has increased significantly over the past decade. Despite the presence of Safe City cameras, patrolling staff, and routine monitoring, violations often go unnoticed, especially during peak hours. Traditional enforcement tools are limited by ground-level visibility and reaction time.

The use of drones to monitor traffic in Islamabad addresses these limitations by:

The first deployment phase covers the Islamabad Expressway and Srinagar Highway—two of the busiest and most congested routes.

The drones continuously scan the roads, live-stream footage to command centers, and assist traffic officials in spotting violations that were previously hard to detect.

Types of Violations Detected by Drones

The ITP has identified several high-risk behaviors that drones can effectively capture:

  • Lane discipline breaches

  • Rash and negligent driving

  • Overloading vehicles

  • One-wheeling and other dangerous stunts

  • Underage driving

  • Riding without helmets

  • Driving without seatbelts

  • Using mobile phones while driving

Thanks to high-resolution drone footage, traffic authorities can quickly verify each violation and issue challans without delay.

Real-Time Enforcement and Instant Challans

One of the most impactful elements of this system is its real-time enforcement capability. As violations are recorded, ITP officials immediately issue e-challans. In some serious cases, the police have impounded vehicles.

During a recent operation, drones helped identify more than 300 violators within hours. Alongside enforcement, traffic police also educated over 350 citizens on the importance of following rules, demonstrating a balanced approach between penalties and public awareness.

CTO Haider emphasized that even though challans are important, the primary goal is to save lives by preventing accidents and reckless driving behaviors.

Rawalpindi Also Deploys Drone Surveillance

Following Islamabad’s example, Rawalpindi has launched its own drone-assisted traffic monitoring system. According to Rawalpindi CTO Farhan Aslam, drones are being used in high-traffic zones to identify and take action against violators.

Key Features of Rawalpindi’s System

  • E-challan activation since November 22

  • Linked directly with the Safe City Command and Control Centre

  • Over 600 violations captured in just four days

  • More than 2,000 cameras installed at 359 locations

  • 15 cameras placed at entry and exit points

  • Priority on high-risk violations such as helmetless riding and mobile phone usage

Rawalpindi traffic officials have stressed that their focus is not merely on issuing fines but on reducing accidents and improving public safety.

Both Islamabad and Rawalpindi authorities are working to promote positive behavioral change among drivers. Educational campaigns, roadside awareness sessions, and social media updates are helping citizens understand the importance of traffic laws.
