Man United vs Newcastle Ends 1-0 After Dorgu Goal
Manchester United beat Newcastle United 1-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Boxing Day. The result lifted United to fifth place in the table. Patrick Dorgu scored the only goal of the match, securing only the club’s second clean sheet of the season.

Head coach Ruben Amorim changed his usual tactical approach for the Man United vs Newcastle clash. United played with a flat back four for the first time under Amorim and finished the match with just 33.4% possession, their lowest in a league win this season.
Amorim’s Tactical Shift Delivers Results
For the first time since arriving at Manchester United, Amorim deployed a flat back four. He had previously insisted he would not abandon his preferred system, even joking earlier in the season that “not even the Pope” could persuade him to change. Yet the demands of the game prompted a rethink.
Lisandro Martínez partnered 19-year-old Ayden Heaven at centre-back, with Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot operating as full-backs. Patrick Dorgu, normally used deeper, was moved into a right-sided attacking role, a decision that ultimately defined the match.
Amorim acknowledged after the game that the performance was far from comfortable but praised his players’ willingness to adapt.
“We suffered together,” he said. “Sometimes we defended with a back six. But if we always have this spirit, we are going to win many games.”
Dorgu’s Goal Makes the Difference
The only goal came in the first half through Patrick Dorgu, who scored his first goal for the club with a controlled left-footed volley from the edge of the area. The strike followed a long throw and a looping header that fell perfectly into his path.
It was a rare moment of attacking quality in a game dominated by Newcastle’s territorial pressure. United finished with nine shots compared to the visitors’ 16 and managed just 15 touches in the opposition box. Newcastle, by contrast, recorded 43.
Despite that, United’s defensive organisation held firm.
Defensive Resolve and Collective Effort
Manchester United kept only their second clean sheet of the Premier League season. Newcastle pushed hard in the second half, forcing a succession of corners and creating several clear chances.
Joelinton fired straight at goalkeeper Senne Lammens when well placed. Joe Willock and Anthony Gordon also failed to convert promising opportunities, while Fabian Schär and Lewis Hall struck the crossbar.
Amorim’s side defended deep for long periods, with midfielders and wide players dropping back to protect the penalty area. The emphasis was on blocking crosses, winning second balls, and maintaining concentration.
Martinez and Heaven Stand Out
The centre-back pairing of Lisandro Martínez and Ayden Heaven was central to United’s success. Martínez was making his first start since February following cruciate ligament surgery and wore the captain’s armband.
Despite his lack of recent match fitness, the World Cup winner produced a commanding display. He won key aerial duels, including a notable header against Newcastle’s 6ft 6in striker Nick Woltemade, and organised the back line effectively.
Heaven, meanwhile, continued a rapid rise. The former Arsenal youth player has now started five consecutive first-team matches, the longest run of his senior career. His calmness, positioning, and decision-making drew praise and earned him the host broadcaster’s man-of-the-match award.
Amorim indicated that Heaven’s form could have implications for team selection once injured defenders return.
“If he continues to play like that,” he said, “it is going to be really hard to take his place.”
Youth and Squad Depth Tested
United ended the match with a notably young defensive unit. Tyler Fredricson replaced Martínez late on, joining Heaven and Leny Yoro in the back line. Tyrell Malacia, making his first appearance since January, also featured.

The bench included several academy players, underlining the extent of United’s absences. Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire, and Matthijs de Ligt were all unavailable through injury, while several others were absent due to international duty.
Despite these challenges, United maintained their structure and discipline until the final whistle.
Man United vs Newcastle Ends 1-0
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe acknowledged his side’s failure to turn possession into goals. The defeat continued a difficult run of away form, with the club having won only once on the road in the league this season.
“You could make an argument we should have got something,” Howe said, “but ultimately we haven’t.”
A Significant Result for Amorim
While the performance lacked fluency, the outcome carried weight. Amorim demonstrated flexibility, his players showed resilience, and Manchester United secured three points at a critical stage of the season.
The result suggested that while Amorim remains an idealist at heart, he is prepared to adapt when circumstances demand. On this occasion, substance trumped style — and it paid off.
